Smile for More Energy

By Bill Ryan – Toward Harmony T’ai Chi & Qigong
There's a quick and easy way to lift your chi.
Smile. Better yet, laugh.
When you physically form your face into a smile, you stimulate your energy to awaken and flow upward and outward. And that flow of energy helps to unblock energy throughout your whole body. We don't know why it does, it just does.

Don't take our word for it. Try it and find out. Try to smile without your energy lifting. You might be able to remain dour for a second or two, but if you maintain the smile in a relaxed way for long, your life energy just starts to move.

In America, you often hear remarks like "when she smiles, her whole face lights up."
Now laugh, and notice what happens to your energy. Try different kinds of laughs and notice how your energy changes with each one.

In addition, smiles and laughter are "infectious". Your smiles and laughter sometimes can cause other people to smile and laugh, and their life energy to lift as well.

So as you go about your daily life, experiment with the power of your smile, both to help you keep your own energy moving and to help others.

When you find yourself starting to feel a little "out of sorts", smile and find out what happens.

The next time you exercise, try smiling while you do it and notice any effects.
When you're walking somewhere, try smiling and feel what happens.

When you wake up in the morning, let a smile be the first thing that you do, and feel whether you can get your energy moving a bit better for the day.

When we teach Dragon & Tiger qigong, we encourage people to smile and laugh as they do the movements. Their energy moves much more easily and quickly when they do.

A smile is not a cure-all, but it sometimes can be a nice tool for helping you manage your energy a little - and even a lot - better.
Enjoy.
