Winter 2008 Newsletter
In a conversation with one of my students
a few days ago we were talking about how we forget to align
ourselves with the seasons. Forgetting our need to maintain
our natural balance. Now it is winter, which is the time
of rest and rejuvenation, and we are often, instead of resting,
caught up in a mad scramble to find presents and go to parties.
Giving presents and going to parties are not bad things
in themselves unless we overdo and allow these endeavors
to prevent us from finding the quiet time our minds and
bodies need at this time of year in order to return to our
natural state. So take a little time this season to relax
and reflect on your life and how you use your time. As we
enter another new year, make time for your own renewal.
Whether it be time for meditation, yoga, t'ai chi ch'uan
or simply a walk, allow yourself to take this time for renewal.
It can lead to new awareness of your place as one part of
the universe around us. Becoming aware of the Tao you can
draw support from that connection to all that is around
and in us. Rejuvenation and growth can follow as you flow
with the Tao. Don't forget the "Big rocks" story
I tell in the beginning class. Make yourself a "Big
Rock" and do those things which will nourish you and
allow you to return to a natural state.
"One should try to return to a relaxed state on
a regular and periodic basis. The simple reason for relaxation
is that it renews us, purifies us, and leaves us with
a profound feeling of serenity. It is not a ritual. It
is not a religious obligation. It is a wonderful state
away from problems. In it, we are poised in our natural
state."
-Deng, Ming Dao 365 Tao
Renewal of body, mind and spirit comes in many forms and
is necessary so we can remain open to the beauty of our
existence and our place in it - in harmony with the Tao,
the sky is clear and spacious,
the earth is solid and full,
all creatures flourish together,
content with the way they are,
endlessly repeating themselves,
endlessly renewed.
Happy holidays and may the new year bring renewed peace
and harmony to you, your family and the families of our
universe.
