Why Meditate?

eople often think they are going to get something from meditation. That idea doesn’t work. Certainly, scientific studies have shown that meditation will reduce blood pressure and relieve stress. Actually, “Ohm Coca cola” (or Pepsi) repeated over and over will lower blood pressure. Not too spiritual but it works.

We live in a world where we chase after the external – things on the outside. But meditation is about peace. It’s about finding joy and happiness inside yourself. There is no peace to be found in external objects. Meditation can take you to where you can free yourself from your demons. A valuable thing in life. It can free you from incessant wants and desires. Meditation can take you, eventually, to awareness of compassion, balance and a sense of wisdom. Meditation can help you let go of those things you know you would be better off without.

Most people do not want to hate or be angry or depressed all the time. It makes you miserable. Peace is hard to find in this world. However, meditation has been used by every spiritual tradition on earth as a means to find peace, balance and then compassion . And finally after all that one finds a sense of morality without which humanity can be pretty unpleasant.

Meditation has been used for thousands of years to replicate and strengthen the natural rest and activity rhythms. Meditating is a very basic way of doing something that will allow your system to settle so you can integrate all your experiences – good, bad and indifferent – so you can be a human being at peace with yourself. No concern about good or bad – you just become one thing. An integrated person who can understand the many parts of your self which are essential to your living a smooth, peaceful and happy life. Able to recognize what is important and what is not. One needs to become an integrated human being not a fractionated one. Sitting and meditating on a regular basis allows you to do this inside yourself where your normal life may not do so. This is where we are trying to go with the Taoist Water Method of meditation.

Happy holidays and may the new year bring renewed peace and harmony
to you, your family and all the people of our universe.
